Activity Description

The Cullinan Diamond Mine is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds.

Many of the world’s most famous diamonds herald from Cullinan, and it continues to produce world-class diamonds under Petra’s stewardship.

The Cullinan orebody contains a major diamond resource of 195 Mcts, suggesting a potentially long life for the operation of +50 years.
Come and enjoy with us exclusive surface and underground tours of the working Cullinan Diamond Mine.

This mine has produced some of the world’s largest high quality gemstones and is the home of the world’s largest diamond – the Cullinan (3106 ct).

Recently, a number of record braking blue diamonds have been found including a 122.52 carat diamond which achieved a value of US$ 27.6 million in 2014.

Customer Reviews

I do think that if you make it more interesting you would attract more people. Show people how the first people started mining in the mine and then how the process developed. Instead of taking the the people downstairs and they cannot see the mining process in any case. People are interested in seeing how the diamonds are mined and how it was done at first and how the technology developed....But taking people into the mine as it look today and just showing them dust and people not working but being lazy, that they can see at home a well!!!! and let people try to mine in a safe part of the mine where you won't really find diamonds anymore..''The money you ask for the tour is not worth it for what you get on the tour - Hantie Helberg

As I had never been in a mine before this was truly a fantastic experience. Our guide did his utmost best to show us around, As he had been in the mine for many (many..) years, his explanations were really learnful. When we got the ride back up in the shaft, it was just shift's end, so with all these people around, we realized how special the job of mining is, and only now we realize that we went straight down more than 700 meters into earth. A lot of preparation and safety precautions apply before we actually went down, our guide took his time to explain all this very carefully, so thanks again for this wonderful experience. - Filip Bettens

A brilliant tour with a highly knowledgeable and experienced guide. We came away with a real appreciation of the history of the mine and an up close and personal experience of the conditions. It was all much more hands-on and real-life than we had anticipated. Two small points that would have enhanced our trip. Firstly, we would have been helped by the briefing at the start covering the need to lock our possessions away, that we should remove as much of our own clothing as we could because of the heat (and that there were proper changing and locker provisions for that to happen) and some idea of the distance we would be walking - I would have taken more care with my selection of boot size if I’d known!. Secondly, at the end of the tour we were taken into the diamond showroom, by now rather dusty, tired and hungry (our tour had overrun by 1.5 hours because of essential lift maintenance) and most importantly without credit cards as they were locked up outside the security fence some 400m away! Not a very good selling technique! - Malcolm Richardson

We booked the Cullinan Underground Mine Tour and were very happy with our guide and the tour. It was nice to get showed around by an experienced person who had worked in and for the company for many years. We are happy about our experience and do not have anything to suggest for future tours. - Simona Denise Frederiksen
